An enthusiastic and fleet-footed audience entered into the spirit of this year’s Viennese Winter Ball with more people taking to the dance floor than previously.

Compere

Karen Elliott
Soprano

Our Compere for the evening, Charles Guard, kept up a lively, witty and well informed commentary about the music and the performers. We were delighted that Soprano, Karen Elliott, and Tenor, Michael Corkhill, agreed to join us this year and their performances of ‘Vilia’ from ‘The Merry Widow’ & ‘Girls Were Made to Love and Kiss’ from ‘Land of Smiles’, among others, added greatly to the occasion.
In the words of our Conductor, Maurice Powell
“ It was a glittering occasion to remember and an evening of great music to help see off those winter blues”
Michael Corkhill
Tenor

The Winter Ball was the first outing of the orchestra’s new set of 3 Premier pedal
timpani which were purchased with the aid of a generous grant from the Manx Lottery
Trust.

As an inducement to bashful would-be dancers, pupils from the Madigan’s School of Dance led the dance numbers, encouraging people to the floor. Ballerinas from the Academy of Dance performed the Dragonfly Polka-Mazurka, choreography by Marie-Louise Britz, to enthusiastic applause.
