“Writing just a few days after our November Family Spectacular - probably the most popular concert in the orchestra's history, which attracted an audience of 800 including some 200 hundred children - I can’t help but feel some sense of an anti-climax , despite the very positive feedback that still continues to pour in and the fact that even facebook is alive with complimentary comments from audience and players alike. The combination of popular 'classics', and music from the world of film and the

The orchestra thoroughly enjoyed rehearsing and performing the kind of repertoire we seldom look at, and I believe that although the purely technical and interpretive challenges of the programme were perhaps not as demanding as a typical symphony concert, the experience was good for us all. Perhaps an annual Family or Children's Concert should feature in our busy concert seasons to take the place of the Winter Ball, which sadly, after two years failed to attract a large enough audience to justify hiring the Villa Marina. I hope so.
The IOMSO is planning a sumptuous Opera Spectacular for November 2012, featuring many of the most famous and popular choruses, arias and duets plus an overture or intermezzo or two. Perhaps we can equal or even surpass our largest ever audience, that for the 2009 Tchaikovsky Spectacular, when we played before some 1100 people.” Maurice Powell - Musical Director 26/11/2011
We were delighted to be joined by the Academy of Dance and the Manx Troopers
The Academy of Dance has been successfully running for over 10 years, offering formal classes in Classical Ballet, Modern Dance and Contemporary. The school is currently at an all time high and is very proud to be the first Dance school in the Island which has been granted a Centre ID by the AQA in order to teach and offer Island students GCSE Dance from the Academy.
Manx Troopers started in 2009 when 2 guys decided to buy StormTrooper suits having been a dream since childhood. They now have a number of suits and are wiling to attend any event such as birthdays, weddings, hen/stag parties etc. They participate in private and public functions and currently do not charge for these events. They also attend events for charity and donate to the Isle of Man's Wish upon a Dream Charity unless another charity is specified.
The idea for a Family or Children's Concert goes back some four years and was first
proposed by our principal horn, Anne Moorhouse. However, other concert plans took
over such as the Haydn Wood Celebration Concert and the 2010 French Spectacular,
so that the idea was shelved. Earlier this year, Charles Guard intimated that he
would love to narrate 'Peter and the Wolf', and thus the seed was planted that resulted
in last Sunday's event. 'Peter and the Wolf' was, I dare suggest, more enjoyed by
the adults in the audience than by many of the especially younger children. The music
is, of course, more obviously 'classical' in style, and the Russian folk tale cannot
compete in the excitement stakes with 'Harry Potter', 'Pirates of the Caribbean'
or 'Star Wars' for today's young audience.
